What will make you happy in life? That is a question everybody asked themselves at least ones in life. Many people’s answer is money, being healthy and have a career. So if you’d have a career now, would you be happy? I don’t think so. It’s funny how society made this image in your head that money and a career will make you happy. Find your passion, start your own company and you will be happy.
Your passion, what is your passion?
I don’t really have a passion… I like to make music, I like science, but I don’t really have a passion for it. So for instance when I want to start a business, then I need to have a passion for what I sell. What if I want to sell t-shirts, I like clothes, but I don’t really have a passion for t-shirts. People always ask me, do you want to be famous, so making music for a living? I actually don’t want to be famous, I like to make music, but just as a hobby. Passion is a word I like to forget when we talk about happiness. You don’t need to have a passion to be happy. Music makes me happy but it’s not my passion in life.
For such a long time people are studying happiness. We know that when a certain hormone called dopamine is released, you will feel happy. During the past two decades, the field of positive psychology has expanded drastically in terms of scientific publications, and has produced many different views on causes of happiness and on factors that correlate with happiness . 50 percent of a given human’s happiness is genetically determined, 10 percent is affected by life circumstances and situations, and a remaining 40 percent of happiness is subject to self-control .
The acronym PERMA summarizes five factors correlated with well-being. Pleasure, engagement, relationships, meaning and accomplishments. These five factors are important in being happy. You need to have pleasure, this can be enjoying your job, this can be drinking wine with friends and it even can be a warm bath. Engagement, like the absorption of an enjoyed yet challenging activity can make you happy. Relationships, being social, having friends and a good bond with your family turned out to be a really important part in someone’s happiness. You need to have meaning in life, a perceived quest or belonging to something bigger. And last but not least, accomplishments. You need to have goals in life so you can accomplish something. This doesn’t mean that you need to have really big goals in life, it can even be ‘go to the gym ones a week’.
Happiness is so interesting because we all have our own ideas about what makes us happy.
